Define a Whole Food Plant-based (WFPB) diet
A WFPB diet:
1) Consists of mostly foods from plants (eg whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans & legumes)
2) Little or no animal products (eg dairy, meat, eggs)

How does an Intensive Therapeutic Lifestyle Change program work ?
ITLCs:
I - produce the INDUCTION phase essential for pts to make the necessary lifestyle changes
T - TRANSFORMS the concept of what is possible with lifestyle change
L - has a LOW requirement for pt motivation or self-efficacy
C - CHANGE is experienced first-hand by pt

Ideally, what are the phases of an Intensive Therapeutic Lifestyle Change program (ITLC) ?
Ideally, a ITLC includes an INDUCTION phase which precedes the MAINTENANCE and SUPPORT phases in lifestyle change
- outpatient programs have visits ~ 60 minutes 1-3x/week for 8-18 weeks
- Residential programs are generally 7-21 days long
- Shorter ITLC immersions can last 3-10 days.

Name 3 Intensive Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (ITLC) programs
1) Pritkin program - longevity center in 1970s - residential, used nutrition, exercise & education to reverse & treat HEART disease
2) Ornish program - 1980s - based on Lifestyle Heart trial which showed regresssion of cardiac stenosis at 1 yr & continued improvement at 5 yrs. Used a low fat VEGETARIAN diet, stress managment, exercise & smoking cessation in a SMALL GROUP setting with positive psychology & connectedness
3) Diehl CHIP program - 1990s - outpatient, encourges a WFPB diet & EXERCISE to prevent/treat lifestyle related chronic diseaes (initially CORONARY program, later COMPLETE HEALTH IMPROVMENT program).
