What is Justice?
Two people who committed the same crime should be treated the same
What is Fairness?
Behaviour or treatment that is morally fair
What is the presumption of innocence?
We assume that people are innocent until there is proof that they have committed a crime
What is equality before the law?
Every person should have equal access to the justice system
What is the equalities act 2010?
Law that made sure that you couldn’t be discriminated based on the 9 protected characteristics
What is civil law?
Law that deal with disputes between individual
What is the High Court?
Hears appeals for civil and family cases
What is the Court of Appeal?
Hears appeals for criminal and civil cases
What is the Supreme Court?
Most senior court in the land
What is the Family court?
Hears most divorces, adoptions, child custody and child protection cases
What are Tribunals?
Hears disputes between employers and employees
What is common law?
Laws that are created by judges through their ruling
What is the European Court of Human Rights?
Oversees the government of Europe and ensures they are following the ECHR
What is the ECHR?
A legal agreement that sets out 14 articles which all members of the Council of Europe must follow
What is the Geneva convention?
An international treaty that sets out the rules for warfare
