Rate of Reaction Flashcards
Name the 4 factors that affect ROR
Concentration
Surface Area
Temperature
Pressure
Activation Energy
The minimum amount of energy needed for a successful collision
How does increasing temperature increase ROR?
It gives the particles more energy which increases the number of collisions and therefore also the number of successful collisions.
It means that more of the particles will have the activation energy.
How does increasing concentration increase ROR?
This means that there are more particles in the same volume therefore more collisions.
How does increasing pressure increase ROR?
This means that there is the same number of particles but in a smaller volume therefore more collisions.
How does increasing surface area increase ROR?
Ths means more particles are exposed and therefore available for collisions. This results in more collisions.
Catalyst
Speeds up the ROR without being used up or chemically altered.
How does a catalyst speed up ROR?
It lowers the activation energy by providing an alternate reaction pathway.
What is required for a successful collision?
Particles must collide with sufficient energy and correct orientation
What increases ROR?
An increase in the frequency or energy of collisions
What must you do to calculate the mean of some data?
Identify and exclusion of anomalies
Add them all up and divide the sum by how many numbers were added together
Give 4 features of a chemical reaction
Compounds are broken up or formed
At least 1 new substance is created
Measurable energy change
No atoms are created or destroyed
