What do Nursing Assistants do?
What level of education do they need?
Performs assigned tasks such as
measuring vital signs
providing personal care(bathing, toileting, feeding) and
reporting observations to another care team.
Must have 75 hours of training; in many states, training exceeds 100 hours. Have high school diploma
License Practical Nurse(LPN/LVN):
Education level?
Able to administer medications and give treatments. Can supervise Na’s daily care of resident.
Have completed 1-2 yrs of education to get certificate but degree is not needed
Registered Nurse( Advanced Practice Nurse/ Nurse practitioner)
Coordinates, manages and provides skilled nursing care as well as supervises Na’s daily care of residents. Administering special treatments and giving medications as prescribed by PA.
Associate degree(2 yrs) can prescribe medication and diagnose. Have diplomas or college degrees and have passed licensing exams.
Five tasks nursing assistants are not allowed to do?
1) Give medications
2) Diagnose
3) Give feeding tubes
4) Insert/remove tubes
5) Change sterile dressing
What is one reason that observing and reporting changes in a resident’s condition is important?
It is important because it helps keep the care plan updated
What is charting?
Charting is writing down important info about the resident.
What is professionalism?
Professionalism is how you behave/act of behaving properly when you are on the job. It includes
how you dress
the words you use
the things you talk about
being on time
completing tasks
reporting to the nurse.
Examples of professionalism
1) Following the care plan and making careful observation
2) Not using profanity(bad words) even if the resident uses
3) Being polite and cheerful even if you are not in a good mood
4) Not discussing personal problems
5) Never accepting gift
6) Always explain the care you will provide and others
What is professional?
having to do with work or a job.
Chain of command:
The line of authority within a facility or agency. A system that shows how authority and responsibility are structured in an organization. top to bottom level(Hierarchy(p- hiraki) or ladder type)
Scope of practice
defines the tasks that health-care providers are legally allowed to do as permitted by state or federal law.
Delegation:
transferring responsibility to a person for a specific task.
Difference between sympathy and empathy?
Sympathy: Sharing in the feelings and difficulties of others. I.e: When you feel sorry for someone else but don’t understand their feeling.
Empathy: Identifying with the feelings of others. I.e: When you understand the feelings of others.
Compassionate
Being caring, concerned, considerate, empathetic and understanding
Conscientious
People who are conscientious always try to do their best. Being guided by a sense of right or wrong.
Always observant, accurate, and responsible for i.e taking accurate measurements of vital signs(temp, Bp) so other care members will make treatment decisions based on your measurements.
