Joints Flashcards
What is a joint?
Formed where two or more bones meet (articulate)
What are the three categories of joint by amount of movement?
- Synarthrosis
- Amphiarthrosis
- Diarthrosis
What are the three types of joint by type of tissue?
- Fibrous
- Cartilaginous
- Synovial
What is a synarthrosis joint? Give an example
Synarthrosis (syn = together; arthrosis = joint)
- Movement is immovable
- e.g. sutres of the skull
What is a amphiarthrosis joint? Give an example
Amphiarthrosis (amphi = on both sides; arthrosis = joint)
- Movement is slight
- intervertebral disc, pelvic symphysis
What is a diarthrosis joint? Give an example
Diarthrosis ( di = two; arthrosis = joint)
- Movement is unrestricted
- e.g. glenohumeral joint
Describe the two types of cartilaginous joint:
- Synchrondrosis (synarthrosis)
- Symphysis (amphiarthrosis)
- Synchrondrosis (synarthrosis)
- Growth plates
- Long bones
- temporary
- Symphysis (amphiarthrosis)
- Divided by a succession of tissues
- Fibrocartilage or fibrous tissue
- Intervertebral discs
- Bone, hyaline cartilage, fibrocartilage, hyaline cartilage, bone
- Mandibular symphysis
- Pelvic symphysis
- Permanent
- Intervertebral discs
Describe the following parts of a synovial joint:
- Joint capsule
- Articular (Joint) cartilage
Joint capsule
- Fibrous
- Tough but pliable connectivetissue
Articular (Joint) cartilage
- Hyaline cartilage
- Smooth firm tissue made of type II collagen and proteoglycans that are hydrophilic
- Avascular and insensitive
Label these joint types
What is the zoological term for these areas?
Define these terms:
Plantigrade
Digitigrade
Unguligrade
- Plantigrade
- Entire sole on ground
- Digitigrade
- Entire digits on ground
- Unguligrade
- Distal phalanxon ground
