What does universal precautions mean?
Treat everyone as if they are infectious.
What is the order we put our PPE on?
Mask, goggles, gloves.
What is the order we take our PPE off?
Gloves, goggles, mask.
What are the steps for cleaning up an infectious spill? (puke)
Put on utility gloves, spray puke (Cavicide). Use paper towels and scoop up puke, throw in general waste. Repeat until gone. Spray, wipe, spray. Wash utility gloves (same way as hands). Shake them off hands.
Steps for using the ultrasonic.
Fill ultrasonic with detergent, place instruments into the basket, place the lid on first, then turn the dial to 10-20 minutes. When cycle is complete, rinse instruments in the sink, then dry, bag, and sterilize.
What is the ultrasonic used for?
Jiggle off debris. (does not sterlize)
What is the cold sterilization/soak used for? What instruments go in it?
Chemical sterilization for plastic instruments. (impression trays)
Steps after a needlestick.
Inform doctor first, squeeze wound area, wash thoroughly, put ointment and bandage, finally, fill out a report.
Steps for cleaning a treatment room.
Remove barriers, take instruments to sterilization area, spray, wipe, spray, (chairs, light, tubes/hoses, counters, computers)
Items that are disposed in each waste - general/biohazard/sharps.
general - paper towels, suctions, barriers, bibs
sharp - needles, carpules, broken glass, ortho wires, burrs
biohazard - blood soaked gauze, teeth, gum tissue
How should an assistant sit in the assistants chair?
Feet on ring, abdominal bar tucked in to support lower back, 4-6 inches above doctors head, thighs parallel to ground, sit up straight, back to back of chair, butt all the way back.
3 factors needed for the autoclave to successfully sterilize.
Temperature (250ºF), pressure (15 PSI), time (20 minutes)
