Describe the historical timeline of trepanation being used to treat mental health.
-Hippocrates (c. 460-377BC) gave instructions
-Middle ages + renaissance saw trepanation as cure for seizures etc
What is a prefrontal leucotomy and when was it used?
-Late 19th century
-Involved cutting a hole in skull and using an instrument to destroying parts of the brain
What is a lobotomy and what was it used for?
-Used in 20th century
-Similar process to leucotomy, destroys the nerve pathways in the prefrontal cortex behind the eye
-Was normally used for those suffering mental conditions such as schizophrenia or depression.
What were the risks of lobotomies?
Life altering affects such as being left with a physical disability
-Loss of memory
-Changes in personality
-Seizures
-Death!

How does Statistical Infrequency definine abnormality?
-Behaviour shown less often than normal amount in society is abnormal.
-E.g 3% of people in uk have schizophrenia, this makes schizophrenia abnormal.
-Doesn’t need a psychological disorder to be abnormal
How does Failing to Function Properly define abnormality?
-If a person cannot live a normal life adequately they are considered abnormal by Rosenhan and Seligman
-Doesn’t transfer a label of mental illness but is a heavily associated symptom of mental illnesses
How does Deviation from Social norms define abnormality?
-A person who does not abide by acceptable or normal social behaviours may be considered abnormal
-May be associated with mental illnesses such as OCD
How does Deviation from Ideal mental health define abnormality?
-A person who does not meet ideal mental health criteria may be considered abnormal and of having a mental illness
-Criteria of ideal mental health is ambiguous and constantly changing

What are the two main approaches to categorising disorders and identifying disorders?
-The diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM) and the International classification of disorders (ICD)
Why are the DSM and ICD updated?
To allow for changes in social attitudes and norms. E.g homosexuality being removed as a disorder in 1986, and adding new disorders.
