What are latitudes
Imaginary horizontal lines that run in the east west direction around the world
What is the equator
Longest line of latitude and divides the world into 2 equal halves: Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere
How does degree changes from Equator to North Pole
0 degree to 90 degree N
How does degree changes from Equator to South Pole
0 degree to 90 degree S
Important latitudes (North to South)
North Pole (90 degree N)
Artic Circle (66.5 degree N)
Tropic of Cancer (23.5 degree N)
Equator (0 degree)
Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degree S)
Antarctic Circle (66.5 degree S)
South Pole (90 degree S)
What are longitudes
Imaginary lines that run in the North-South direction from North Pole to South Pole on the Earth’s surface
How are longitudes measured
Degree or minutes east or west 0 degree from 0 degree longitude
Important longitude
Prime Meridian or Greenwich Meridian
What is the International date Line
Lies opposite the Greenwich Meridian. 180 degree longitude. 180 degree east and 180 degree west lie on the IDL
How to read maps
Read latitude then longitude (North then South)
Big ideas of geography
Space
Place
Environment
Scale
What is space
General, objective location or area. Abstract, no meaning
What is place
How people are aware or attracted to a space.
Space that has meaning
What is environment
Surrounding
Physical and Human environment
Physical environment
Hydrosphere (Water Cycle)
Lithosphere (Ground)
Biosphere (Living things on Earth)
Atmosphere (Different layers of air)
What is scale
Level at which a geographical feature or issue is examined
Types of scale
Map scale
Time scale (Second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year, decade, century, millennium)
Geographical scale (Local, national, regional, global)
How to interpret a photograph
- Divide the photographs into 9 different sections
Horizontally: Foreground, middle ground, background
Vertically: Left, centre, right - Identify relevant and important features of the photograph
- Draw geographical conclusion between features and the question. Use the location of the pictures
What is photo annotation
Add to a resource:
—Descriptive notes
—Explanatory notes
How to annotate photographs
