Chapter 4.1 Flashcards
samples, surveys, and bias
population
every individual in the group
census
data on every individual in the population
sample survey
a survey given to a sample (small group) of the population
sample
a small group of individuals from the population
inference
process of drawing conclusions about the population based on sample data
convenience sample
taking a sample of the individuals who are easiest to reach
voluntary response sample
individuals choose to opt in to the survey
bias
a study flaw, systematic flaw, that leads to consistently unrepresentative data (over or underestimation)
random sampling
uses chance to select a sample
simple random sample (SRS)
every individual in the population has an equal chance of being selected for the sample
stratified random sample
a random individual is selected from each strata and is surveyed to make up the sample
strata
groups of individuals that are similar
cluster random sample
a cluster is randomly selected then every individual in that cluster is surveyed (sample=cluster)
cluster
groups of diverse individuals that represent the population
undercoverage bias
when some individuals in the population do not have a chance of being selected for the sample
