What year did Christina’s father, Gabriele Rossetti, immigrate to England?
1824.
In what way was each of Christina’s siblings considered successful?
Maria - wrote on Dante and Italian grammar.
Gabriel - a poet and a painter, famous under the name Dante Gabriel.
William - a literary critic and memoirist of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
Where did Christina recieve her education?
From her mother (Frances) who was a trained governess, provided earliest education to all her children, Maria and Christina recieved all of their education from her. Frances commited her time to providing her children a highest form of education and was devoted to her religious beliefs and utilised devotional readings.
What was Rossetti’s childhood like?
Privalidged, happy, loving and talented.
In what year did Christina suffer a collapse in health?
- The cause is unknown, however bouts of illness followed, leading to a thyroid malfuntion.
In what year was Christina proposed to by James Collinson, and why did she decline?
- She refused to marry him due to his recent conversion to Roman Catholicism.
Why did Christina accept Collinson’s second proposal?
As he promptly returned to the Church of England.
Why did Christina and James’ engagement end?
His return to Roman Catholicism once again in the spring of 1850.
What was Christina diagnosed with in 1892?
Breast cancer. A masectomy was performed in her own home.
What was the cause for Christina’s death?
The cancer returned in 1993, and following months of deteriorating health, Christina died in her own home on 29th December 1894.

In a home for ‘fallen’ women.
