Q

Elaborate on: The Trojans reach Italy and make contact with the Latins

A
  • Aeneas realises they have fufilled the Prophecy when they ate the bread they used as tables and so were in their promised land.
  • The Latins experienced 2 portents
    →a swarm of bees
    →Lavinia’s hair on fire
These are confirmed by an ocacle of Faunus to mean that Lavinia should marry a foreigner and that Latium will be conquered by a foreigners army.
30
Q

Elabourate on: Juno summons Allecto to cause war

A
  • Allecto infects Amata with a snake causing her to go insane and go against Lavinia and Aeneas’ marriage
  • Allecto infects Turnus with anger by hurling a burning branch at him
  • Ascanius goes hunting and Allecto gives his dogs the scent of a favoured stag of Latinus’ herdman, which Ascanius fells. The herdsman summons shepards, the Trojans come to Ascanius’ aid and a skirmish ensues. Both sides retreat, the Latins going to Latius and demand war. Amata supports and Turnus amasses an army. Latinus retires to the palace unable to prevent this. Juno fills in for him and opens the gate signalling war.
31
Q

Elaborate on: War breaks out, starting with a catalogue of Italian heroes

A
  • Turnus amasses an army of Rutilians, Mezentius and Lausus are mentioned alongside many other heroes.
  • Finally Camilla is mentioned however no other amazons are, so it is unclear whether she was alone but it is likely.
32
Q

Elaborate on: Aeneas meets Evander and Pallas

A
  • Aeneas and the Trojans reach Arcadia and interupt a festival to Hercules, Pallas threatens them however when Aeneas reveals his identity they are welcomed.
  • Evander promises Aeneas military help, remembering his friendship with Anchises.
  • They all feast and Evander shows Aeneas Arcadia - the future site of Rome and tells him the story of Cacus and Hercules
33
Q

Elaborate on: Story of Cacus

A
  • Evander tells the Trojans of the story behind the appreance of a landmark
  • The monster Cacus lived in the cave in that hill (the Aventine) and he used to steal cows from the nearby villages and take them back to his home. One day Cacus stole some of Hercules’ cattle (from Geryon his 10th labor). Hercules was angered and tracked his stolen cattle to Cacus’ cave.
  • Cacus was clever and led the 8 stolen cattle back by their tails so not to leave evidence however one of them called to their friends and his plan was foiled.
  • Hercules came after him and he retreated to his cave, blocking the enterance with chains created by his father Vulcan. Hercules was unable to enter. Hercules circled the who Aventine hill 3 times, he tried the door 3 times and fell defeated to the ground 3 times. To get in Hercules tore off the top of the cave revealing Cacus’ den.
  • Hercules then threw missiles at Cacus from above. Cacus breathed smoke and covered the place in darkness. Hercules jumped right in and killed Cacus.
34
Q

Elaborate on: Turnus attacks the Trojan camp whilst Aeneas is away

A
  • Juno sends Iris (a messenger goddess) to tell Turnus that Aeneas is away from camp and now would be an ideal time to attack
  • The Trojans saw the Italians approach and barracaded themselves in thier camp as per Aeneas’ instructions
  • Turnus fruitlessly tries to gain entry to the camp, instead he attacks the Trojans ships burning them. However these ships are made from wood from a pine-forest sacred to Cybele (jove’s mother) and she is granted permission from Jove to save the fleet and she transforms them into women. Turnus sees this as a sign the gods are on his side as the Trojan’s means of escape has been taken away.
35
Q

Elaborate on: Venus gives Aeneas armour made by Vulcan

A
  • Venus give Aeneas:
→ helmet - with a ‘fearsom crest and spouting flames’
    → sword
    → bronze breastplate
    → greaves
    → spear
    → shield
  • On the sheild the description is divided into 3 parts
    ✧ scenes of early rome
▴ the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus
▴ The kidnapping of the Sabine women
▴ The defeat of the Gauls
    ✧ The battle of Actium
    ▴ in the centre
▴ Augustus, Agrippa, senate, the people and the gods VS Antony and unnamed Cleopatra with the egyptian gods at their back ‘monstrous gods’
    ✧ Augustus’ triple triumph
36
Q

Elaborate on: Nisus and Euryalus

A
  • Nisus and Euryalus represent an erastes/ eromenos relationship - the old Greek-like ways
  • Nisus and Euryalus volunteer to venture out of the camp to get a message to Aeneas for his swift return.
  • Ascanius promises them both rewards such as women and land. Euryalus asks that his mother is cared for in the event of his death.
  • Nisus and Euryalus left at night and found the latins passed out drunk and asleep. They killed all they could in silence. They left when dawn approached.
  • Euryalus took Rhamnes’ gold studded sword belt and Messapus’ helmet and made his way with Nisus back on their mission.
  • They encountered Latins led by Volcens, and were spotted when the helmet reflected light and gave away their position and existance. They were forced into the woods.
  • Euryalus was hampered by the weight of his spoils but Nisus had escaped. Euryalus was captured as he was being dragged away, Nisus threw a spear at one of the attackers killing him.
  • Volcens unable to identify the aider ran at Euryalus with his sword which caused Nisus to reveal his position in a panic to save his lover/friend/commrade. Volcens drove his sword through Euryalus’ torso. Virgil compares him to a weary flower.
  • Nisus charges at Volcens intent on revenge. He succeeds burying his sword in Volcens face but is wounded in the process. He flings himself onto Euryalus’ corpse dying together.
  • By dawn the Latins fixed the heads of Nisus and Euryalus on spears and showed them to the Trojans.
37
Q

Elaborate on: The Italians retaliate

A
  • The Rutilians discover the slaughter in their camp
  • By dawn they fixed the heads of Nisus and Euryalus on spears and showed them to the Trojans.
  • Euryalus’ mother laments and asks the Rutilians and Jupiter for death.
