11-GPWS (1) Flashcards
(8 cards)
What does pressing the GPWS SYS pushbutton do?
All basic GPWS alerts (mode 1 to 5) are inhibited.
What does an amber FAULT light in the SYS pushbutton indicate on the GPWS panel?
Any failure of GPWS mode 1 through 5
What effect, if any, does an amber FAULT light in the SYS pushbutton have on the TERR mode?
No effect at all
Describe a situation when a pilot might press LDG FLAP 3.
- When directed to by an ECAM or procedure
- When intending to land using CONF 3.
** In this case, LDG MEMO displays FLAPS…CONF 3 instead of CONF FULL
Describe a situation when a pilot might press the FLAP MODE pushbutton.
When directed to by an ECAM or procedure to avoid nuisance warning in case of landing with flaps setting reduced
What effect, if any, does the failure of TERR mode have on basic GPWS?
No effect whatsoever
According to our limitations, in what conditions should predictive GPWS be inhibited?
The predictive GPWS functions should be inhibited (TERR pushbutton to OFF, on the GPWS panel) when the aircraft position is less than 15 NM from the airfield:
- For operations from/to runways not incorporated in the predictive
GPWS database.
- For specific approach or departure procedures, which have
previously been identified by the operator as potentially causing
expected or spurious terrain alerts.
Note: The decision to inhibit the predictive GPWS functions must NOT be based on flight crew judgement only.
According to our FOM, what are some conditions when GPWS may be inhibited?
- The Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) may be inhibited or
deactivated if any of the following conditions occur: *
+ A warning occurs during daylight VMC conditions and it is obvious
that the aircraft position, altitude and gear/flap configuration are
satisfactory. (Note: Proximity to a strong temperature inversion may
cause the radio altimeter to show height above differing air densities.)
+ The GPWS fault monitor light illuminates and the fault cannot be
corrected. (Note: Flagging radio altimeter may cause the light to
illuminate. Do not inhibit GPWS if the radio altimeter flagging is
above 2500’ AGL)
+ When a planned abnormal condition requires aircraft operation within the boundaries of the GPWS warning envelope (i.e., abnormal gear or flap landing configurations).
+ On a front course ILS, the inhibit function should only be used when flight below the glideslope is intentional (e.g., when following the glideslope to touchdown precludes landing at the normal touchdown point). Never cancel an actual glideslope warning until clear of all clouds and the runway is clearly in sight.
