Q

What is the purpose of this play?

A

Priestley used the inspector as his mouthpiece to demonstrate his socialist views to the audience. He did not agree on capitalism and how the system of it worked. Inspector calls purpose was to warn the upper class men about the consequences they would face due to their selfishness and ignorance. This play focuses on social responsibility and how the rich should take that responsibility instead of avoiding it. It is about owning up and redeeming yourself and trying to focus on the reality of the real world.

Q

Context

A

The play was written in 1945 and set in 1912. It was before the two world wars. Back in the Edwardian era, Upper classes refused to mix in with the lower and put a divide between them. This is shown in an inspector calls as we can see that the Birlings disregard Eva smith even after hearing about her suicide. Affairs and pregnancy etc were not the norm back in their society as it effected the reputation. The play and the characters, are an example of the rich and poor and how they lived.
