What are zoonoses
Infections passed between animals and humans not including animals dependant on host for life cycle eg malaria, schistomiasis
Anthroponosis
Reverse zoonoses is where humans infect animals

Common zoonoses in the UK
Salmonella campylobacter toxoplasma ringworm rabies
Rabies
viral inf through bite
mostly dogs
2 week incubations
travel to brain via periperal nerves to cause acute encephalitis
Rabies symptoms
malaise headache fever mania lethrgy coma overproduction saliva and tears death by resp failure
Rabies tests
PCR of saliva or CSF
Rabies treat
Post exposure prophylaxis- 4 doses over a month if not already treated or 2 a few days apart if treated alreay
Immunoglobulin into wound
Brucellosis
Caught from unpasturised milk and cheese not common in UK now
Brucellosis symptoms acute
High fever Weakness Headache Drenching sweats Splenomegaly lasts 1-3 weeks Subacute is fever and joint pain over 1 month
Chronic brucellosis symptoms
Flu like symptoms malaise depression chronic arthritis endocarditis
Brucellosis treatment
long acting doxycycline 2-3 mths with rifampicin or IM gentamycin
Add cotrimoxazole for 2 weeks in CNS disease
Leptospirosis
Was common in NE fish workers
L, icterohaemorrhagica
Now L. hardjo from cattle commonest from
Leptospirosis symptoms
Fever Meningism Myalgia Headache Abdo pain Sickness Red eyes Loss appetite No jaundice Incubation 2-40 days
Leptospirosis spread
Pee of infected animal Rats mice cows pigs dogs
Leptospirosis severe
Weils disease Jaundice AKI Bleeding Plus SOB, coughing up blood, chest pain, oedema Pulmonary haemprrhage
