Yr7 Unit 1: Cells Flashcards
How do you create a slide to observe a white flower petal? (Detail)
You place the piece of flower, that was extracted using tweezers, and place it in the centre of the glass slide. Add a drop of dye, such as iodine, to turn the petal a more visible colour. Apply a cap.
How do you use a microscope? (Detail)
TURN LOGHT ONTO SLIDE!
1: stage to lowest point
2: slide on stage, stage clips
3: objective with lowest magnification
4: turn coarse focus until visible
5: turn fine focus until focused
Fill in blanks. All living things are made up of ……… .They are the smallest form, and are the ……….. blocks of life. To ……….. cells you use a ………… . This …………. the object
Cells. Building. Observe. Microscope. Magnify.
What is the calculation for total magnification?
Eye piece X objective lens.
10. X 20. =200
What is the movement of substances called?
Diffusion
How are root hair cells adapted to their function?
They have a large surface area, and extension to absorb nutrients and water, they don’t have any chloroplasts, as there is no light underground, so they don’t carry out photosynthesis.
What are nerve cells scientific name?
Neurone
How are red blood cells adapted to their function?
They contain a substance called haemogoblin, a red pigment that joint oxygen. They also have a large surface area, so nutrients diffuse in and out quicker. They have no nucleus
Whats the scientific name for a lear cell, and how is it adapted?
A palisade cell. It is found near the top of the leaf. It has a long thin surface area, so sunlight can diffuse easily, to many chloroplasts
Whats inside an animal cell?
Cell membrane
Mitochondrion
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Whats inside a plant cell?
Chloroplasts Vacuole Cytoplasm Nucleus Cell membrane Cell wall Mitochondrion Chloroplasts
What is the function of cytoplasm.
A jelly like substance where chemical reactions take place.
What is cell membrane?
A barrier surrounding the cell, controlling what enters and exits, such as oxygen coming in, and carbon dioxide coming out.
What is a nucleus?
It controls the cell, and contains genetic information to create new cells
What is a mitochondria?
This is where respiration happens, and energy is created
