The expansion of one’s nation’s authority and power by establishing colonies in another territory
Nationalism
Feeling of patriotic loyalty that can lead people of similar historical or cultural background to band together to form a larger nation. It can also lead to breaking away from a larger nation to form a smaller one.
New weapons
Machine gun, tank, poison gas heavy artillery, airplane, u-boat
What did women do?
Worked in factories, fields, and volunteered to help the military. After the war women argued they had earned the right to vote.
What did African Americans do?
They fought in segregated units
Great Migration
Occurred when hundreds of thousands African Americans moved to the north
Why didn’t America join the war immediately?
They didn’t want to be involved in international disputes
What caused the US to join the war?
American lives were lost due to Germany U-Boats. Trade ships were also sunk. Americans had strong anti-German feelings
How did America help before they entered the war officially?
They loaned the Allies over two Billion dollars
What started the war?
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were shot by members of the black hand. War was declared and the alliance system caused it to spread

Trench Warfare
When the war is carried out from trenches dug into the ground. The trenches were in a zig-zag pattern to prevent shrapnel from blowing the whole trench. It was disgusting on the trenches and a stalemate ensued.
