Who was Rosie the Riveter?
Rosie was an iconic symbol that represented the working woman. The U.S. government used her image as a propaganda campaign to recruit women into the work force.
Were women allowed to work in the Armed Forces?
Yes many women were allowed to work as nurses and in WW2 women, for the first time, were allowed to fly American military air crafts.
What was the Lend-Lease Act?
A legislation passed by Congress that allowed the purchasing of war materials in it benefited American interests.
Which country did the U.S. aid monetarily the most with the Lend-Lease Act?
Great Britain.
What was different from the American draft in 1940 than previous drafts in U.S. History?
This was the first time there was a peace time draft.
What was done to the people who claimed “conscientious objection” during the draft?
They were placed in non-combat positions, either at home or overseas.
What were victory gardens?
Gardens that Americans planted in order to grow food for themselves. This allowed farmers to divert their crops to the military.
What was one material that was of immediate need in WW2?
Rubber.
What are U-boats?
Submarines or “Unterseeboots”
Why did the U.S. see the u-boats as a menace?
Because Germany was trying to prevent merchant ships to enter the east coast.
What mediums did the U.S. government use to promote pro-Allied and anti-Axis ideas?
Films, photographs, and advertisements.
What did the war propaganda feature?
They contained racial stereotypes to make the enemy look bad. Also, the encouraged individual sacrifices to join the war effort.
What was the G.I. Bill?
A legislation which aided in veteran servicemen in assimilating to civilian life.
