World interdependence Flashcards
How is the world interdependent?
- People are moving from one place to another easily due to air travel.
- People in different places are connected with the internet and telephone.
- TNCs have branches in many countries.
- Countries are dependent on each other for trade, information and investment.
What is meant by the term Globalisation?
Globalisation is the spread of an idea or people from its place of origin to the whole world.
Why has the world become more interdependent?
- Trade. Countries are trading more than ever, importing things they need and exporting things other countries need.
- Influence of TNCs. TNCs have many branches across the world since labour is cheaper in LEDCs.
- Technology. Advances in communication and transport makes it easier for people around the would to be connected.
How has improvements in technology helped?
- Satellites make communication easier so people are connected to each other.
- Businesses can communicate to each other from all over the world.
- Advances in computer and communication technology means that TNCs can run their global business with ease.
- Air travel makes travelling from country to country cheaper and quicker which aids businesses and growth of tourism.
What is the problem with the digital divide?
We use the internet for communication and entertainment. Businesses use the internet to sell products. We are able to find the latest news and job openings on the internet.
However, a study in 2008 showed that in the US, only 55% of families had broadband at home (a majority of which are African- Americans) which means that they are at a disadvantage to the rest of us.
Some LEDCs cannot afford internet and are thus disconnected from the world.
What are the advantages of world interdependence?
- Peoples can travel to other countries in the hope of finding better jobs and having a better quality of life.
- People who are qualified are able to travel to other countries to fill in any skill shortages.
- Countries with skill shortages are able to recruit from other countries.
What are the disadvantages of world interdependence?
- Migrants who are not qualified end up doing low- paid and dangerous work.
- Highly qualified people from poorer countries are migrating to richer countries in the hope of finding a better paid job. This leaves their own country with a skill shortage.
What is the brain drain?
The highest qualified individuals from LEDCs are being recruited to work in MEDCs where there is a high demand for their skills.
What are the advantages of the brain drain?
- Staff in LEDCs are earning more than they ever could in MEDCs.
- Staff can return to LEDCs, bringing with them advanced knowledge from MEDCs that will aid in the development of that skill in their own country.
- Waiting times are reduced in MEDCs where there is a shortage of doctors.
What are the advantages of the brain drain?
- The money invested into university education by the governments of LEDCs are not being returned in the form of high taxes from well paid jobs.
- The best doctors from LEDCs are recruited to MEDCs which leaves the LEDCs with a shortage of trained staff.
