Woman In Black set Flashcards

1
Q

set - furniture

A

-random objects- wicker trunk, chair, stool, rail with costumes
-all well used so dull colours
-wicker chest creaked and groaned
-light enough to be moved- quickly changing scenes e.g. chest was used as a bed, desk, train, horse and cart
-non-naturalistic set allowed audience to suspend their disbelief and to buy in the scenes being crafted for them
-contrast is created later on when the naturalistic bedroom was revealed
-having such representational set earlier added to the impact of the room and unnerved the audience

Q

set- causeway + hidden steps

A

-makes audience feel involved and frightened about where they lead or who is down there
-created a separate space so that audience knows that kipps is in danger away from the relative safety of the house
smoke blurred the line between audience and play- immersing them in
hidden steps allow woman to disappear- supernatural-ness which makes audience afraid for him

Q

set-nursery

A

-upstage behind the gauze
-furniture had been covered with sheets in order to make graves
-access was through the locked door, which then flew open
-when kipps was upstage, tension was high
-furniture was solid, dark wood
-small bed, dresser and rocking chair
-covers and pillows on the bed and neatly folded clothes and toys, carefully arranged in the dresser
-colours were brighter than the rest of the dull, muted set
-red cushions, blue woollen outfits and colourful music box
-its detailedness in contrast to the rest of the set made it seem supernatural and other-worldly
-when kipps was in the room he was behind the gauze, away from the audience + safety
-after the woman in black destroys it- the heavy wooden furniture being scattered around the room demonstrates the depths of her rage + paranormal powers- made kipps seem unsafe as we witnessed what she was capable of
