Breaking the seal

A

Everything is relevant. Step one of ensuring the seal is easily broken is getting the positioning right at the beginning. Make sure the tins meet at a strong angle flush on one side and a big gap on the other side, not directly over or at a slight angle as that will result in the tins overlapping too deeply. The second step is to give it a firm but not hard pop to seal it. Work on the bare minimum yet secure pop force for producing the seal. If you let it sit a few seconds it becomes much easier to break. The next step for success is to hold the tins with your non popping hand as close to the bottom of the bottom tin as possible so that the tin rather than your hand absorbs the force and vibrations of the crack. Two strategies for the crack: 1. Don’t hit below the edge, hit right at the top middle edge of the bottom tin almost in a downward motion. You want to feel the edge against your palm. Imagine the metal bending as your palm touches it and work on pulling the palm away from the tin immediately after making contact rather than following through. 2: “First, place you finger on the middle-point between the “flush side” of the shaker where there’s no gap, and the “gap side” where there’s that one centimeter of space, between the two tins. Then, move your finger an inch and a half down. That is the sweet spot. Give the sweet spot a firm, confident, beautiful, sexy pop with the heel of your free hand. It’s not about hitting it really hard, just in the right place. When you hit it right you’ll hear a cracking sound echo out. Sometimes you’ll hear a gentle hissing sound. That means you’ve dislodged the seal but not fully broken it. Hit it again, you’re close! You may not get it on the first try, don’t worry! This takes a little practice to get a good feel for. The most important thing is to not get frustrated and hit it so hard you hurt your hand. Remember, it’s not about strength, it’s about location. Take a deep breath, focus your chi, and try again. You’ll get there.”
There’s a satisfying crack sound that happens when it’s done correctly. It’s very satisfying and I never get that sound.
If the pop is not successful, you can do Kevin’s trick of applying forward pressure with your thumb on the back of the top tin like you’re flipping a big electric switch that is giving you resistance. sometimes this even works without popping it at all.
There is a third way. Just give the entire side of the shaker where the tins meet a real firm big sexy slap grab. You’ll hit your sweet spot target by hitting all of the targets at once! It almost always results in a seal break easy enough to be undone by thumb pressure. It looks good too. and it you want to be precise, focus on hitting it at 2 or 2:30.
