What is Democracy?
control of an organization or group by the majority of its members.
What is suffrage?
The privilage of who is allowed to vote.
Representation
What types of people are allowed to vote.
What would you need to vote as a representative?
To vote, you would have to own land, or a home worth at least 40 shillings.
Who arent allowed to vote?
Women arent allowed to vote.
What does Democratic/democracy translate as?
“Demos”: people, “Kratos” power.
People of power.
What is the opposite of democracy?
Autocracy.
Features of democracy:
Free and fair elections, Human rights protected, freedom of speech, everyone apart from those in prison and under 18 are allowed to vote.
How many General Elections?
Every 5 years.
How many constituencies are there in Britain and how are they represented?
There are 650 consituencies in Britain and each constituency is represented by one MP ( Member of Parliament ).
How are MP’s ( Members of Parliament ) elected?
MPs are elected from candidates votes.
What then happens to the candidates votes?
Candidates are registered with the electoral commision.
