Griot
Griots were storytellers and they were used to passing history down by generations.
Mali Empire
Ruled from 1200 - 1450 in the western part of Africa. Traded salt and gold.
Ghana Empire
Ruled from 400-1200 in the western part of Afruca.. Traded iron products, animal products, salt, and gold. Taxes from traders passing through the empire made Ghana rich.
Songhai Empire
Ruled from 1000-1600 in the mid-west part of Africa. Traded salt and gold. Gained control of West African trade by conquering Timbuktu.
Berber
The people who lived in North Africa before the Islam came into North Africa. The Berbers were West African traders. They used camels and caravans to trade. The caravans would carry gold northward. They also traded salt.
Mansa Musa
The king of Mali from 1312 to 1337. He supported Muslim artists and scholars, and he built mosques and libraries.
Ibn Battuta
An Arab lawyer from Morocco. He set out to explore the Muslim world in 1325. Was surprised by the practices of the Muslims.
Djenne
An important trade center for gold and salt. It attracted students from all over West Africa.
Timbuktu
Mansa Musa built this city and it was built in Mali.
