Week 4 - VPNs Flashcards
What does VPN stand for?
Virtual Private Network
3 steps on how a VPN works?
- VPNs carry an encrypted data packet (with a 2nd set of data packets) to the endpoint of the VPN server
- VPN Server strips away encryption, leaves top 3 layers of a new packet
- New packet is encapsulated with data link information and sent out to LAN
What is a VPN defined?
VPNs use an encrypted tunnel to allow remote computers/routers to connect to a network as if they were physically connected
What is two-factor authentication?
more than just a username and password is required to authenticate (a short lived token is used)
What’s a proxy service?
a server acts on behalf of client to access a service
What are web proxies use for today?
if a business wants to limit access to a certain website (like twitch)
What is a reverse proxy?
a reverse proxy appears as a single server but distributes incoming requests to a website to many physical servers
What are some ways reverse proxies are used?
- load balancing
- uses hardware built for cryptography
