Week 2 Flashcards
It asks about the value of a variable or about an association between variables, or about a causal relationship between variables
Research questions
It can be categorized as basic research, which is aimed at a better understanding of a given phenomenon, or applied research, which is aimed at solving an immediate, practical problem
Research questions
Give one characteristics of a strong research question
- A research question pinpoints exactly what you want to discover in your work. A good research question is essential to guide your research paper, dissertation, or thesis.
-Focused on a single problem or issue
-Researchable using primary and/or secondary sources
- Feasible to answer within the timeframe and practical constraints
- Specific enough to answer thoroughly
- Complex enough to develop the answer over the space of a paper or thesis
-Relevant to your field of study and/or society more broadly
It is a condition or characteristic that varies, taking on different levels, categories, or values
Variable
Variables can be grouped into ____________ variables and _____________ variables .
Quantitative variables and Qualitative variables
Differences in the value of a variable from observation to observation
Variability
Measures numerically and ordered using a score
Quantitative variables
Represent groups or categories and cannot be numerically ordered
Qualitative variables
A description of a variable in observable, measurable terms
Operational Definition
Relates to the consistency of a measure
Reliability
Relates to the accuracy of a measure
Validity
Repeating a study that has already been completed. It is critical to scientific research to determine whether the findings from previous studies hold true with different participants and sometimes with varying circumstances by repeating the survey. This adds to the evidence for a topic of interest and helps develop scientific theories.
Replication
The efforts were made to follow the same procedures as the original research with a new group of participants. A similar result means consistency. However, theoretical arguments offered by the authors of the first study may not necessarily be true or that there are no confounding variables
Direct Replication
Replicating the original study and extending the findings by adding new variables to answer additional questions
Replication with extension
Researchers test the hypothesis from the original study using different methods
Conceptual replication
