WEEK 1: Immunity against bacteria and fungi Flashcards
name 3 barriers of infection the SKIN has
epithelial cells, fatty acids, antibacterial peptides, normal flora
name 3 barriers of infection the GUT has
low pH, enzymes (pepsin), normal flora
how do the lungs provide a barrier to infection?
movement of mucus by cilia
how long does it take for an antigen specific immune response?
> 96 hours
what is a hematopoietic cell? where does it come from?
an immature cell that will differentiate into different kinds of blood cells. derived from bone marrow stem cells.
what do dendritic cells do?
they pick up antigens and activate specific Tc and Th cells through antigen presentation pathways.
class 2 MHC presentation activate what cells?
Th cells
where do Th cells proliferate?
in the lymph node (rapidly)
how long does it take for Th cells to mature?
approx. a week
what are Th1 cells appropriate for?
appropriate for intracellular bacterial or viral infection
what are Th2 cells appropriate for?
appropriate for parasitic infection
what are Th17 cells appropriate for?
appropriate to activate neutrophils to bacteria and fungi
class 1 MHC presentation activate what cells?
Tc cells
where do Tc cells proliferate?
in the lymph node (rapidly)
how are Tc cells stimulated to proliferate?
by IL-2 production by Th cells
