Week 1 Flashcards
What was the philosophy of the geometric (non-anatomic) school design?
- The articulation of teeth guides the mandible during mastication
- Disregard mandibular condyles
What was the philosophy of the condylar (anatomic) school?
-The condyles of the mandible guide occlusion
What was Bonwill know for?
The equilateral triangle theory, which noted that there is 10 cm distance between the condyles of the mandible, and a 10 cm distance between each condyle and the mid-incisal point
What was Balkwill known for?
the Balkwill angle - formed between the Bonwill triangle and the occlusal plane (26 degree angle)
What is considered the occlusal plane?
distolingual cusp from 2nd molar to 2nd molar to the midincisal point - this is also an equilateral triangle
What is the curve of Spee?
anteroposterior curve of the teeth (by Francis Graf von Spee)
When looking at the curve of Spee, is the maxillary arch convex or concave?
maxillary = convex mandibular = concave
The ____ the path of condyles, the more pronounced the curve of Spee because both have the same radius.
steeper
What was Christensen known for?
discovering posterior disocclusion during protrusion of the mandible
-also the first to make an intraoral protrusive record out of wax to determine condylar inclination
What was Monson known for?
Discovering a way to set denture teeth using Bonwill’s equilateral triangle conforming to the surface of a sphere
Where did Monson say the center of his sphere was when setting teeth?
the Glabella
What is the curve of Wilson?
a mediolateral curve of the teeth
In the curve of Wilson, is the mandibular arch convex or concave?
mandibular is concave
maxillary is convex
What does the curve of Wilson connect, and what is it’s purpose?
It connects the buccal and lingual cusp tips of the mandibular molars (from frontal plane)
It aids in mastication resistance and the elevated buccal cusps prevent food from leaving the occlusal table
What was Hall know for?
his conical theory of mandibular movement, which assumes the point of rotations is the external occipital protuberance
