Week 1 Flashcards
Function of IS
Prevents + eradicates infections
Innate immune system
General, cells engulf pathogens e.g macro-neutrophils, dendtritic cells capture pathogens and present them to T cells to begin adaptive immunity
Inflammation
Histamine increases blood flow to infected area moving wbc there causing inflammation
Adaptive immune system
Recognises, previous infections, main features are:
B cells- Provides antibodies, binds to antigen on pathogens which helps to destroy cells, remembers for quicker response.
T cells: Directly attacks pathogen, recognises antigen
Antibodies- When B cells produce AB, AB blocks pathogen entering
Name lines of defense
1st: Skin, mucous,
2nd: Immune cells , inflammation
3rd: B,T cells, AB produced
Difference between lmyphoctes and phagocytes
L- specific, P non specific
L found in blood + LS, P only blood,
L involves B T cells, NK cells P macrophages + neutrophils
Where are B cells produced
Bone marrow
Where are T cells produced
Thymus
Spleen role
Collects foreign substances, destroys old rbc
Dif between patohgen and antigen
Antigen causes response, part of pathogen that is a substance
Pathogen harmful part
Role of antibodies
Binds to pathogen to stop it spreading
Neutrophil role
Engulfs and kills microbes, 1st line defence
Eosinphils
Kills parasites coated with antibody
Basophils
Releases histamine, inflammation
Monocytes
Kills pathogens that have been ingested
