Week 1 Flashcards
Describe Homeostasis
Maintain a relatively constant internal environment in the body
Because… Cells are surrounded by extra cellular fluid that can change temperature chemical make up, ETC. Cells function optimally when these variables are in a narrow range.
Three mechanisms involved in maintaining homeostasis
(1) receptor-monitors
(2) control centre-sends info
(3) effector-changes level back to normal
what is auto-regulation?
No correspond, within one tissue or organ that coordinates homeostasis
what extrinsic regulation?
involves multiple organs often including parts of the nervous system to coordinate homeostasis
describe negative feedback
April it helps to maintain homeostasis reduces the deviation either way
describe positive feedback
Increases the deviation (spirals out of control)
eg. Laughter, birth (oxytocin),blood clotting, feedback from a microphone
