Weather Instrumetns Flashcards
Anemometer
measures wind speed by using small cups that catch wind and spin a dial.
Barometer
measures air pressure (barometric pressure)
Hygrometer
measures humidity (amount of water vapor in the air)
Rain Gauge
measures the amount of precipitation that has fallen (only rain)
Thermometer
measures temperature
Wind Vane
measures the direction of wind by pointing towards the direction it comes from
What does a meteorologist measure?
They measure weather, temperature, humidity, precipitation and wind speed and direction.
Can a rain gauge be used for all types of precipitation? Why or why not? What could you use instead?
It can’t because only liquid can be measured in a rain gauge, solids with a ruler.
What kind of weather would you expect when air pressure rises?
Weather will be dry and sunny
What kind of weather would you expect when air pressure drops?
Weather will be rainy or stormy
What is humidity?
The amount of water vapor in the air.
What is a warm front?
The leading edge of a warm air mass. As this air approaches it gets lifted above the cooler air. As it rises it expands and cools off, the water vapor then condenses and creates clouds.
What is a cold front?
A front bringing in a cold air mass is a cold front.
