Weather Flashcards
how can anticyclones be identified on a synoptic chart?
widely spaced isobars
no fronts/clouds
pressure increases from centre outwards, upwards of 1000 mb
What is the aspect and how does it affect temperature?
Which direction it’s facing. North facing places are colder than south facing places.
What are the 5 main air masses?
Polar Maritime Arctic Maritime Polar Continental Tropical Continental Tropical Maritime
What are the characteristics of each air mass?
mT= warm and wet, from Atlantic Ocean
cT= warm and dry, from Southern Europe
mP= cold and wet, from North Atlantic Ocean
cP=cold and dry, from Northern Europe
mA= very cold. Low humidity so not always wet. From Arctic Ocean.
What are isobars? What do they show about the weather?
Isobars are lines of equal pressure. Then show areas of low or high pressure, and the closer together they are, the windier it is.
What weather does a low pressure weather system bring?
An depression has two fronts. The warm front comes first, and brings steady rain and warm temperatures. The cold front brings cloud and heavy rain showers. clear and dry in the warm sector. An occluded front brings sudden downpours of heavy rain, which happens when the cold front catches up with the warm front
How can low pressure weather systems be identified on a synoptic chart?
Cold fronts (line of blue triangles)
Warm fronts (line of red semicircles)
Tightly packed isobars
Pressure decreases towards the centre (under 1000mb)
What is an anticyclone?
an anticyclone is a high pressure weather system which brings settled weather. the warm air is sinking so no clouds are formed, and therefore there is no precipitation.
what are the characteristics of an anticyclone?
gentle wind in a clockwise direction.
wide spaced isobars
warm in summer, no cloud
cold in winter, no cloud
How does the latitude affect the temperature?
The closer to the equator, the hotter it is.
What are the characteristics of a depression?
wind, precipitation, temperature
Anticlockwise wind direction. Strong winds. Warm temperatures in warm front and sector, cold in cold front and sector. All three fronts bring precipitation because when warm and cold air meet, the warm air is pushed up to where it cools, and it condenses into water.
What type of weather do places close to the sea have, compare to inland locations?
Wetter
What is the relief, and how does it affect the weather?
The height of land. High places are colder and wetter than flat land.
