Waves Booty's Notes Flashcards
Define Amplitude.
The maximum displacement.
Define Complete Cycle.
The distance between any 2 points with the same direction.
Define Wave Length.
- The distance between any 2 points with the same direction.
- Two points at the same phase
Define Displacement.
The distance between the particles and the rest point.
Define Periodic Time (T).
The time for one complete cycle.
Define Frequency (F).
The number of complete cycles/waves per second. (Hz)
Define Sound Waves.
They are mechanical waves & longitudinal waves.
What does the velocity of sound depend on ?
- Type of Medium
- Temperature
What are the 2 rules of Reflection?
- Angle of Incident = Angle of Reflection
2. The incident, normal and reflected ray are all in one plane/ planar perpendicular to the reflector.
What are the 3 motions of Waves ?
- Reflection
- Refraction
- Defraction
What is Reflection?
Change in direction of the sound wave within the same medium.
What is a characteristics of a good reflector?
Should be very smooth & flat surface. (SOUND)
Shiny. (LIGHT)
How can echoes occur?
It can only work if the sound produced & the reflector is more than 34m apart.
What is Refraction?
It is the change in direction when the sound wave is transferred from one medium to another.
What is Defraction?
The lambda of the wave should be bigger than the diameter/ width of the opening.
