Waves Flashcards
What are all the parts of a wave?
Rest position, Displacement, Peak, Trough, Amplitude, Wavelength, time period and frequency.
What is the equation for the speed of sound?
Speed = distance ÷ time
or
v= d÷ t
An observer 400 m away records a 1.2 s time difference between seeing the hand signal and hearing the bang of the starting pistol. What is the velocity?
400 ÷ 1.2 = 333 m/s
What causes waves?
When a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate.
What’s a medium?
The material that a wave travels through.
What is a longitudinal wave?
A wave where the vibration of the medium is parallel to the direction the wave travels.
What is a transverse wave?
A wave that moves the medium in a direction perpendicular to the direction the wave travels.
What is frequency?
The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time.
