Waves Flashcards
the rate at which a vibration occurs that constitutes a wave, either in a material (as in sound waves), or in an electromagnetic field (as in radio waves and light), usually measured per second.
Frequency
vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person’s or animal’s ear.
Sound
is the power transferred per unit area, where the area is an imagined surface that is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the energy. In the SI system, it has units watts per square metre (W/m2).
intensity
s the characteristic of a sound that is primarily a psychological correlate of physical strength (amplitude). More formally, it is defined as “that attribute of auditory sensation in terms of which sounds can be ordered on a scale extending from quiet to loud”.
Loudness
a unit used to express the intensity of a sound wave, equal to 20 times the common logarithm of the ratio of the pressure produced by the sound wave to a reference pressure, usually 0.0002 microbar.
Desicbels
the quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it; the degree of highness or lowness of a tone.
