Aquifer
A water-bearing band of porous or permeable rock
Atmosphere
The thine envelope of gases (mainly nitrogen and oxygen) that surrounds the earth.
Biosphere
The space at the Earth’s surface and withing the atmosphere occupied by living organisms.
Convection
The motion of gas/liquid which when warmed rises until eventually it cools and sinks in a continuous circulation.
Glaciers
Large, slow moving masses of ice
Ice sheets
The largest accumulation of ice, defined as extending for more than 50,000 km².
There are only 2; Antarctica and Greenland
Valley Glaciers
Glaciers confined by valley sides.
Ice Shelves
Thick masses of floating glacial ice that is permanently attached to land, formed and fed by tongues of glaciers extending outwards from the land into sheltered waters.
Iceberg
A floating mass of freshwater glacial ice that has broken from the seaward end of a glacier or an ice shelf.
Permafrost
Ground that remains at or below 0°c for at least 2 consecutive years.
Sea ice
Frozen seawater in the Arctic ocean and its adjacent seas.
Northern Hemisphere sea ice extent typically ranges from around 8 million km² in September to around 16 million km² in March.
Southern Hemisphere sea ice extent ranges from around 4 million km² in Feb to around 20 million km² in September.
