Water Section 1 Flashcards
Molecule made up of two hydrogen atoms & one oxygen atom
water molecule
A molecule that has electrically charged areas
polar molecule
What are the charges of the atoms in a water molecule?
Each hydrogen is slightly positive
The oxygen is slightly negative
What is Capillary Action?
The combined force of attraction among water molecules & within the molecules of surrounding materials.
Example: water rises in a tube.
What is surface tension?
The tightness across the surface of water caused by the polar molecules pulling on one another.
Example: raindrops form round beads on a windshield, water striders skate across the surface of a pond.
What is a Universal Solvent?
Water
What is a solution?
A mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another.
Example: adding a powdered drink mix to water.
What is a solvent?
The substance that does the dissolving.
Example: adding powdered drink mix to water- the water is the solvent.
Specific Heat
The amount of heat needed to increase the temperature of a certain mass of a substance by 1 degree C (Celsius).
Why does water have high Specific Heat?
Due to the strong attraction of water molecules.
What is evaporation?
A way that liquid water can become gas.
It is the process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb enough energy to change to the gaseous state.
Example: let your hair air-dry after bathing.
What are the three states of water?
Solid- ice
Liquid- water
Gas- water vapour (steam)
Condensation
Gas changing to liquid.
When you fog up a window by breathing on it, that is the effects of condensation.
Freezing
Molecules of cooling water loose energy. They would move more and more slowly. At 0 degrees Celsius, liquid water freezes, changing to ice
Melting
Heating frozen water (ice) to 0 degrees Celsius where it begins to melt.
