Water Cycle Flashcards
Key words
What is the only input?
Precipitation
What is precipitation
Moisture in any form
What are the six types of storage
- Interception
- Vegetation storage
- Surface storage
- Soil storage
- Groundwater storage
- Channel storage
Interception definition
Temporary storage as water is held by plants, buildings and hard surfaces before it reaches the soil
Vegetation storage
Any moisture taken up by and held in the plants
Soil moisture
Water held in the soil
Groundwater storage
Water held within permeable rocks (acquifer)
Channel storage
Water held in rivers and streams
Name all flows and processes
Infiltration, throughflow, percolation, stem flow, Base flow, channel flow, surface runoff,
Infiltration definition
Water entering the topsoil
Throughflow definition
Water seeping through the soil below the surface but above the water table
Percolation definition
The downward seeping of water through rocks under gravity, especially on permeable rocks
Stem flow definition
Water flowing down plant stems or drainpipes
Base flow
Slow moving water that seeps into a river channel (groundwater flow)
Channel flow
The volume of water flowing within a river channel
