WATER Flashcards
CHONPS
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Sulfur
Water Structure (Universal Solvent)
- Base of cytoplasm: 65%
- All living things are made up of 65% of water
- Structure and characteristics of water are crucial for chemical reactions in cells
The chemical formula of water
H2O
- Do not share electrons equally
- O2 has a higher attraction for electrons
- O2: partial negative charge
- H atoms: partial positive charge
WATER IS POLAR !
Polar and Non-polar
Tendency of electrons moving/attracted to one atom than the other,
opposite is non-polar.
Polar + Polar = dissolves
Polar + Non-Polar = no dissolves
Hydrogen Bond
Water is polar so water molecules are attracted to other water molecules
Cohesion and Adhesion
Cohesion: same molecule
- H2O + H2O
Adhesion: attraction
- H2O + Hydrophilic
Universal Solvent
Partial negative and partial positive charges make water able to disassociate many ionic bonds
ACID
More H+ ions (lower PH)
0-7
BASE
Less H+ ions (more PH)
7-14
Neutral
7
Hydrophilic
Water-loving
Substances containing O2 and N2
Hydrophobic
Water-fearing
Non-polar compounds
Amphipatmic
Both hydrophilic and hydrophobic
