- dunmore with around 500 loyalists and assistance of warships launched raids on virginian coastal towns

- nov 1775- issued proclamation that promised freedom to any slave who fled their rebel master and supported the british war effort
- hated by white southerners solidfying rebel support in VA- (south dependent on slavery)

- intelligence suggested that loyalists and british forces could put an end to rebellion in the carolinas and georgias
- backcountry settlers who resented the tidewater elite, were ready to support britain

- carolinian loyalists acted far too quickly and were defeated at Moores Creak (1776)
- general clinton sailed south from boston in feb 1776 but found little support along North Carolina coast
- clinton thus sailed north to south carolina, attempting to take Charlestown but failed
