W12 L2 Flashcards
What are ectotherms?
organisms that rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature
What are poikilotherms?
animals whose body temp approximates ambient temperature and are not capable of controlling their temp as the ambient temp varies
What are heterotherms?
animals that can regulate body temp when active but allows body temperature to fluctuate when inactive
What is behavioral thermoregulation?
evolve behaviors to optimize body temperature for biological processes?
What is carrier’s observation?
the observation that air-breathing vertebrates which have 2 lungs and flex their bodies sideways during locomotion find it very difficult to move and breathe at the same time
How does carrier’s constraints explain why these animals have difficulty moving and breathing during locomotion?
because the sideways flexing expands one lung and compresses the other , shunting stale air from lung to lung instead of expelling it completely to make room for fresh air
What is the phenomenon of large bulky ectothermic animals are more easily able to maintain a constant, rel. high body temp than small animals by virtue of their smaller SA:V ratio?
Mass Homeothermy (Gigantothermy)
