Alliteration
3 or more words starting with a similar sound
Ex: Little Larry likes to like the sticky lollipop
Antagonist
Main bad character of a story
Ex: Voldemort
Analogy
An extended metaphor or simile, often comparing something unfamiliar with something familiar or 2 things that are mostly no alike
“Life is like a 5 mini surprise ball: You never know what you’re going to get.”
Antonym
A word that means the opposite of another word
Ex: hot vs cold
Comparative adjective
An adjective used to compare 2 things
Bigger, angrier, prettier
Contraction
2 words shortened and combined, removing 1 or more letters and using an apostrophe.
Ex: can’t, don’t, isn’t
Context
How a word is used in a sentence.
Ex: last night I read a book called How to Read a Book.
Consonants
All letters that are NOT vowels.
Connotation
The feeling associated with a word.
Ex: blue = sad
Contradiction
Situations, ideas, or statements that are in opposition to one another.
Ex: “the sound of silence” or “a living ghost”
Compare and contrast
Look at how things are the same or how they are different from one another.
Ex: Elizabeth and Jonathan both like Legos but Elizabeth is a girl and Jonathan is a boy.
Climax
The most exciting part of a story
Ex: Aladdin escapes death at the ends of the earth and returns to save the day
Conflict
The main struggle in the story.
Ex: Jafar tries to steal the kingdom from the Sultan in Aladdin
Denotation
The dictionary definition of a word.
Ex: blue is a color
Dialogue
Conversation
Foreshadowing
Hints or clues the author gives that something is going to happen.
Ex: “it was a dark and stormy night.” Probably means something bad will happen
Figurative language
A literary device to help readers get a better picture in their minds.
Can use similes, metaphors, personification, etc.
Ex: “dancing stars filled the sky” or “the flames licked around her arm as played with the fire in the hearth”
Fiction
Books and stories that are make believe
Genre
What kind of story it is.
Ex: romance, mystery, horror, fairy tale
Hyperbole
An exaggeration
Ex: “I’ve seen this movie a million times” or “I died of embarrassment”
Homonym
Words that sound the same but have different meanings (and sometimes spellings).
Ex: hoarse vs horse or bark (noise) vs bark (on a tree)
Irony
The part of a situation that is odd or amusing because it’s the opposite of what expected.
Ex: a fire station burns down or a police station is robbed.
