Visible light and the solar system Flashcards
What is the model called when the earth is the centre of the universe
Geocentric model
What is the model called when the sun is the centre?
Heliocentric model
What did Galileo do in 1610?
Observed Jupiter using telescope, saw three stars, then week later saw fourth one.
What did he realise?
That what he saw were actually moons that orbited Jupiter, therefore proving the geocentric model was wrong because not everything orbited Earth.
What is wavelength?
Distance between two peaks
What is frequency?
Complete waves per second
What is amplitude?
Height of wave
Identify the 2 types of wave
Transverse and longitudinal
Which waves are transverse?
- Light+all other EM waves
2. S-waves
Which waves are Longitudinal?
- Sound + Ultrasound
2. P- waves
What is the angle at which the vibrations travel in transverse waves?
90 degrees to direction of wave
what direction to vibrations travel in longitudinal waves?
Same direction as wave
What is reflection?
When some of the wave energy is reflected back ar you( seeing your reflection in puddles)
What is refraction?
Change in direction
What happens when light reaches the glass to air boundary?
It speeds up, bends away from normal, because its going into less dense medium
