Viruses: Viral genomes Flashcards
DNA viral genomes
All DNA viruses are dsDNA, except Parvovirus
DNA viral genomes
All are linear, except Papilloma, Polyoma (circular supercoiled) and Hepadna (partial circular)
RNA viral genomes
All RNA viruses are ssRNA, except Reoviridae
Positive stranded RNA viruses (I went to Retro Toga party where I drank Flavoured Corona and ate Hippy California Peeckles)
Retrovirus, Togavirus, Flavivirus, Coronavirus, Hepevirus, Calicivirus, Picornavirus
Naked viral genome infectivity
Purified nucleic acids of most dsDNA (except Pox and HBV), and (+) strand ssRNA viruses are infectious
Naked viral genome infectivity
Naked nucleic acids of (-) strand ssRNA and dsRNA (Reoviridae) viruses are NOT infectious
Viral replication
DNA: All replicate in nucleus, except Pox (carries its own DNA-dependent RNA polymerase)
RNA: All replicate in cytoplasm, except Retroviruses
Naked (non-enveloped) viruses [Naked CPR and PAPP smear]
RNA: Calicivirus, Picorna, Reovirus;
DNA: Parvovirus, Adenovirus, Papilloma, and Polyoma
Enveloped viruses
All enveloped viruses acquire their envelopes from host cell plasma membranes, except Herpesviruses which acquire envelopes from Nuclear membrane
DNA viruses (HHAPPPPy)
Hepadna, Herpes, Adeno, Parvo, Pox, Papilloma, and Polyoma
DNA viruses
All are icosahedral, except Pox (complex)
