Viruses Flashcards
Where do Rotaviruses effect? What is their pathogenesis? Treatment?
Rotaviruses are dsRNA virus, that affect the GIT. They infect villi epithelium and shorten villi. Fluid therapy because of dehydration mainly used.
What is Equine Influenza Virus? Where does it infect? Clinical signs? Treatment?
Equine influenza is ssRNA virus, with two subtypes. It infects the upper resp tract. CS = Dry cough, nasal discharge, pyrexia, depression. Treat with vaccine and isolation.
What is Feline Panleukopenia Virus? Where does it infect? Clinical signs? Treatment?
FPV is ssRNA parvovirus. It non-selectively destroys WBC and causes immune suppression. Also affects crypt cells of intestine. Vaccinate.
What are Pox viruses? How large are they? What two important viruses fall into this category?
Very large viruses, encode all their own enzyme for replication. Includes Myxymatosis and Orf.
What is Rabies virus? What are the two forms?
Rabies is a ssRNA virus that infects the CNS. It is bullet shaped. It can be either the furious form or the paralytic form (foaming etc.)
What is Equine Herpes Virus? Where does it infect? Pathogenesis?
Affects vascular endothelium. Enters via resp tract and infects lymphocytes. Leads to vasculitis and thrombi. It can cause abortion or neurological disease.
What is Canine distemper virus? What is the pathogenesis? Clinical signs?
CDV is ssRNA virus that is multisystemic. Enters via resp tract, and spreads to lymphoid organs via blood. Affects epithelia and CNS. CS = Cough, nasal discharge, vomiting, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis.
