Viruses Flashcards
What is pathogenic virulence?
The pathogens ability to cause disease
What are the 5 virulent factors?
Adhesion, Colonisation, Invasion, Toxins, Immune response blockers
What is the Adhesion virulent factor?
Sticking to a molecule on the membrane of the host cell
What is the colonisation virulent factor?
Proteins that allow the pathogen to colonise hosts
E.g. Bacteria produces an enzyme (urease) that allows it to live in acidic environments
What is the Invasion virulent factor?
Proteins that allow pathogens to enter the hosts body.
Disrupt host cell membrane
Stimulate endocytosis in the cell
What is the Toxins virulent factor?
Proteins that poison host cells and cause tissue damage.
What is the immune response blockers virulent factor?
Some bacteria and fungi have a capsule that blocks the host’s immune system
Some bacteria can create a slime layer that can protect them from chemical messengers in the host’s immune system or antibiotics
What is a Endotoxin?
toxins bound to the outer membrane of the pathogen
What is a Exotoxin?
proteins produce and released by the pathogen.
Difference toxins are secreted by different species
