Vestibular System Flashcards
Where does endolymph drain to for reabsorption?
Through the endolymphatic duct to the sigmoid sinus.
Which organ is in the ampulla of semicircular ducts?
Cristae
Which organ is in the utricle and saccule?
Maculae
Which vestibular organ has hair cells in one direction? In two?
1-cristae, 2-maculae
What kinds of movements does the cristae detect?
Angular acceleration in 3 orthogonal planes.
Where are the cell bodies of the sensory axons activated by hair cells?
Vestibular (Scarpa’s) Ganglion, which give rise to the vestibular part of the vestibulocochlear N.
Which nuclei are important for adaptations of the vestibular ocular reflex?
Floccuus and Fastisial nuclei. Also called the vestibulocerebellum
What happens if there is damage to the projection from the vestibular complex to the thalamus?
Vertigo
Where do first order neurons project from the vestibular system?
Vestibulocerebellum (flocculus and fastitial nuclei)
Where do fibers from the cristae project?
Lateral, medial, and superior vestibular nuclei.
