Vertical motion Flashcards
Define projectile
object upon which the only force acting is the force of gravity.
Define free fall
describes the motion of a body in which the only force acting on it is gravity
What type of quantity is velocity, displacement and acceleration?
Vector quantities - direction needs to be taken into consideration
What is the acceleration for a free falling object
9.8 m.s. downward (gravity; if air resistance is negligible)
Terminal velocity
the constant velocity that a free falling object eventually reaches when air resistance prevents further acceleration.
What is air resistance proportional to?
1) velocity of the object
2) area of the object
What happens to gravitational potential energy as an object falls?
In terms of energy, when the ball is released it has kinetic energy, KE. As it rises during its free-fall phase it slows down, loses kinetic energy, and gains gravitational potential energy, PE. As it starts down, still in free fall, the stored gravitational potential energy is converted back into kinetic energy as the object falls. (curved on graph)
What direction does velocity take?
Velocity takes the direction in which object is moving
What direction does acceleration take?
Acceleration takes the direction it which object accelerates in.
Inertia
a property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force./tendency of a mass to continue moving in it’s original direction
Impulse
product of net force acting on object and time over which the net force acts on object. ( mvf - mvi)
elastic collision
is a collision in which there is no net loss in kinetic energy in the system as a result of the collision.
inelastic collision
is a collision in which kinetic energy is not conserved due to the action of internal friction.
