Vegetitive propagation Flashcards
What are the stages of cloning by taking cuttings?
- A small part of stem with growing bud is removed.
- The cut edge is dipped in hormone rooting powder to promote root growth
- Cutting put directly into compost in a pot or outside soil.
- Roots grow and cutting is now a grown plant which is a clone of parent plant
What are steps that increase success rate of cuttings?
Use a non-flowering stem, make oblique cut in the stem, use hormone rooting powder, reduces leaves to 2 or 4, keep cutting well watered and cover cutting with plastic bag
How does using a non-flowering stem improved success?
Resources only needed to support root growth, not flowers
How does making an oblique cut in the stem improve success
There is a larger SA for root growth and hormone powder
How does using a hormone rooting powder increase success?
More roots grow from meristem cells
How does reducing leaves improve success?
Less surface area for transpiration to reduce water loss
How does keeping the cutting well watered improve success?
There is no water uptake from roots
How does covering the cutting improve success rate?
Less water is lost by transpiration
What are examples of plants that are propagated by cloning?
Bananas, sugar cane and sweet potato
What are advantages of vegetative propagation
It is faster to get new individuals than by seed, cropping time is much reduced compared to seed and micropropagation and guaranteed quality of plants
What is a disadvantage of vegetive propagation?
Lack of genetic variation which is an issue if disease or climate change occurs
