Vector and Scalars Flashcards
What is a vector quantity ? give an example
A quantity that has both direction and magnitude - forces
What is a scalar quantity? Give an example
A quantity that has only magnitude (mass, volume)
What are drawn to show the vector quantity?
Arrows
What does the size of the arrow represent?
The size of the force
What does direction of the arrow represent?
Direction of the force
What is distance and is it S or V?
Distance: scalar, total length traveled
What is displacement and is it S or V?
Displacement: vector, shortest length between the start and end points + a direction
distance travelled in a given direction
Speed =
speed (m/s) = distance (m) / time (s)
What does a distance time graph plot?
The distance an object travels against the time it takes to do so
What does gradient tell you on a DT graph?
the speed, steeper = faster
Average speed on a DT graph?
total distance / total time
Increasing velocity =
acceleration
decreasing velocity =
deceleration
acceleration =?
acceleration (m/(s*s)) = change in velocity (m/s) / time (s)
a = (v - u)/t
A velocity time graph shows?
How velocity changes as time goes by
On a VT graph, a flat line =?
constant speed
On a VT graph, the gradient of the line shows?
acceleration
gradient =?
change in y/ change in x
How to calculate distance on a VT graph?
multiply constant speed by low long it was constant for
(vv) - (uu) =
(v*v) - (u*u) = 2as v = final velocity (m/s) u = initial velocity (m/s) a = acceleration (m/(s*s)) d = distance/displacement (m)
What is velocity?
speed in a given direction
For arrows in 2 opposite directions?
subtract the forces, direction is that of the larger force
For 2 arrows in the same direction?
Add the forces, direction remains the same
For 2 arrows 90 apart?
Use pythag - direction = angle formed
