Varaibles And Patterns Flashcards
dependant variable
one of the two variables in a relationship. its value depends upon or is determined by the other variable, called an independant variable. (y-axis) an example is the cost of trail mix depends on how much you buy which is the independant variable
variable
a quantity that can change. letters are often used as symbols to represent variables in rules or equations that describe patterns.
independant variable
one kf the two variables in a relationship. its value determines the valueof the other variable which is called a dependant variable. (x-axis) an example is if you organize a bike tour, the number of people who register to go determines the cost for the remaining bikes, which is the dependant variable.
income
the amount of money taken in.
profit
the amount by which income is greater than expenses. the money taken in after expenses have ben paid.
expression
a mathematical phrase contIning numbers, variables, and operation symbols.
equation
a rule containing variables ghat represents a mathematical relationship. an example is the formula for finding the area of a rectangle, a=lw
coefficient
the numerical factor in any term of an expression. (21n-21 is the coefficient)
rate of change
the amount of change in the dependant variable produced by the given change in the independent variable.
equivalent expressions
expressions that represent the same quantity when the same number is substituted for the variable in each expression
