- propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, glycerol
- flavourings and nicotine
Describe the growing prevalence of vaping globally and in Australia.
- Globally, there is an increasing trend but but lower prevalence in Asian countries.
- Increasing in Australia, 11% of Australians over 14 y.o have vaped before.
- NSW has the highest teen-to-adolescent vapers
- not as prevalent in older groups
- boys are more likely to vape than girls
What is nicotine and how does it affect the health of the youth?
Nicotine is a stimulant drug which is highly addictive with a fast onset of action and can lead to nicotine withdrawal and dependency.
- In youth, it harms the adolescent brain in memory, attention and learn.
- There are lasting cognitive and behvioural impairments.
- Mental health is worsened.
Difference between cigarettes and vapes?
- cigarettes have 8-20 mg of nicotine in them but only 1-2 mg is actually absorbed by the smoker.
- a pack of cigarettes contain 22-36 mg of nicotine.
- Vapes contain a range of volume and concentration of nicotine depending on the solution and the amount of puffs a day.
Why do people vape?
- to cut down or reduce smoking
- they think it is less harmful than smoking
- cheaper
- tastes better/ flavourful
- some places accept vaping instead of smoking.
- curiousity, socially acceptable, targetted marketing
What are the regulations place in Australia with regards to vapes?
- banned or restriction of the selling of vapes and the amount of nicotine and/ or other contents.
- health warnings of packets, restriction of on advertisements and promotions
- taxes on vapes
What global regulations have been in place for vapes?
- canada, finland and netherlands have banned flavourings
- china has limited concentration nicotine to 200 mg per e cig
- EU requires health warnings on products that contain nicotine
- denmark and israel requires plain packaging of e-cigs
What do labels on nicotine vaping products must contain?
- ingredient list
- concentration of nicotine
- health warnings; keep reach out of children, avoid contact with eyes or skin
What are some pharmacy legislations for vapes?
- packaging must be child resistant
- no prohibited ingredients, nicotine is the only permitted active ingredient
What are some common SE of vaping?
- headache
- dizziness
- nausea
- mouth and throat irritation
- dry cough
What are some serious SE of vaping?
- addiction
- burns and injuries
- poisonings
- seizures
- lung injury
What are long term effects of vaping?
Currently there is a lack of evidence but thought to be CV and respiratory issues.
