What is nicotine and how does it affect the health of the youth?

A

Nicotine is a stimulant drug which is highly addictive with a fast onset of action and can lead to nicotine withdrawal and dependency.
- In youth, it harms the adolescent brain in memory, attention and learn.
- There are lasting cognitive and behvioural impairments.
- Mental health is worsened.

  • cigarettes have 8-20 mg of nicotine in them but only 1-2 mg is actually absorbed by the smoker.
  • a pack of cigarettes contain 22-36 mg of nicotine.
  • Vapes contain a range of volume and concentration of nicotine depending on the solution and the amount of puffs a day.
